Report: South Dakota State’s Aaron Johnston Will Not Be Offered Minnesota Women’s Basketball Job

Even thought he was rumored to be on a very short list of candidates to take over the women’s basketball program at the University of Minnesota, South Dakota State head coach Aaron Johnston will apparently not get the job.

1500 ESPN in Minneapolis is reporting that Virginia Commonwealth coach Marlene Stollings will be named the new Gophers coach, pending a background check. She would replace Pam Borton, who was fired after 12 seasons.

Stollings just finished her second season at VCU, where the Rams went 22-10 overall and 9-7 in the Atlantic 10 this year.  Her overall record at the school is 33-29.

In 2012 she was the Big South Conference Coach of the Year at Winthrop.

If Stollings does get the Minnesota job, she will be the third former VCU employee to come to Gopher athletics in the last two years.

In June of 2012, U of M hired current athletic director Norwood Teague from the school. David Benedict, who is now on Teague’s staff at Minnesota, was the interim AD at VCU at the time Stollings was hired there.

Those VCU ties, and the fact that a man has never coached the women’s basketball team at Minnesota, weighed heavily in Stollings’ favor.

Two men – SDSU’s Johnston and Wright State’s Mike Bradbury – along with another women – Wichita State’s Jody Adams – were also supposedly finalists for the job.
Johnston just finished his 14th season in Brookings with a WNIT semifinal loss at UTEP last Thursday, the Jackrabbits’ eighth straight Division I post season appearance.  His overall record at SDSU is 341-117, which includes the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championship.
