When I read that the website Thrillist was ranking the 'Worst U.S. States For Speed Traps', I was convinced South Dakota would pull in a ranking at, or near, the top.

After all, we have a lot of open road where people drive very fast (other people, or course, not me) and sprinkled throughout those highways and byways are a number of small towns where the speed limit drops considerably - and quickly.

That creates the perfect conditions for speed traps, with the Highway Patrol, local cops, or sheriff's deputies sitting and waiting for the offending parties to come blowing through town.

Boy was I wrong...

It turns out, only three states (Mississippi, North Dakota, and Alaska) have fewer speed traps per 100,000 residents.

According to Thrillist, South Dakota has 12.3 speed traps per 100,000 people, a far cry from the number-one state, Vermont, which has a whopping 52.1!

The article says you're best chances of getting nabbed in the Mount Rushmore State are in Rapid City.

Are you surprised South Dakota didn't finish closer to the top? Where is the most notorious speed trap you've come across in this state?
