RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Rapid City program is helping give access to preschool programs to children in economic hardship by providing scholarships.

The Rapid City Journal reports the Starting Strong program has been giving scholarships to kids ages 3 to 4 since 2011, with 60 kids getting the scholarship each year worth as much as $2,700 a year. Six preschools are affiliated with the program.

The program is run by the nonprofit group Early Childhood Connections. Autumn Gregory, the group's director, says economic hardship is the primary eligibility requirement.

Gregory says data from the school district shows graduates of the Starting Strong program are "at or above the level" of other children enrolled when going into kindergarten.

A breakfast is being held April 29 to raise money, recognize partners and promote awareness.
