RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Rapid City is considering moving its annual public fireworks display from New Year's Eve back to the Fourth of July.

The City Council in 2013 decided to move the display from summer to winter, after drought and dangerous fire conditions during the summer of 2012 prompted the cancellation of the July Fourth show.

Alderman Steve Laurenti says he regrets the decision because he thinks the show should be held on the patriotic holiday. The council is considering moving the show back to July Fourth beginning in 2017.

Fire Chief Mike Maltaverne is wary of the proposal. He says crowds at previous summertime shows have reached 20,000 people, and a quick-moving fire would cause serious evacuation and safety concerns.
