There could be another urban deer hunt by the Sioux Falls Police Department this winter. However some trends point toward a smaller deer herd.

Animal Control Supervisor Julie DeJong says her office heard a lot of grumbling about urban deer in 2014. “Last year we responded to an exponential increase in citizen complaints specifically in the southeastern part of Sioux Falls.”

South Dakota Game Fish and Parks authorized the hunt that took place in January and February of this year. DeJong wants to be certain about planning a similar event in the near future.

“The number of complaints has dropped from last year which is a good sign. We’re not sure why. That’s why we want to do this survey again. We don’t know if it’s because we did such a good job with the deer removals or that they’re happy that we’re working on the problem.”

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday November 24 at 7:00 PM at the Outdoor Campus near Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls. DeJong says this will give residents the opportunity to ask questions and give input.

Also a survey is available online or survey cards can be filled out at any Sioux Falls public library.
