With temperatures hovering in the mid 90's on Tuesday, you need to protect yourself from heat-related stress by following these prevention tips from the CDC:

  • Drink cool, non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages.  It's best to avoid extremely cold liquids because they can cause stomach cramps.
  • Rest, often. If you need an excuse to nap on the couch, hot days are just the ticket.
  • Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath.
  • If possible, seek an air-conditioned environment. If you don't have air-conditioning, consider visiting an air-conditioned shopping mall or public library to cool off.
  • Wear lightweight clothing.
  • If possible, remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Do not engage in strenuous activities.

Heat illness occurs when your body keeps in more than heat than it loses and your temperature rises. You are at greater risk of heat illness when you:

  • Are dehydrated. Dehydration is your worst enemy during hot weather.
  • Are not used to working in the heat.
  • Are in poor health.
  • Have had heat illness before.

The bottom line - avoid the heat as much as you can!
