PINE RIDGE, - A unique program on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation aims to give Oglala Sioux youth an outlet through music.

Independence Through Music matches young musicians on the Pine Ridge reservation with experienced, well-established Native singers and songwriters to learn the ropes of the music business. That includes everything from how to properly hold a microphone to planning a tour and creating a marketing plan.

Davidica Little Spotted Horse started the program two years ago. Little Spotted Horse is a professional musician who lives on Pine Ridge.

She says the program is meant to teach the youth how to become passionate about something.

Participants are selected through an audition process, and workshops are held over a two-month period with performances planned on the reservation and a chance to record a CD.
