President Truman Tells America We’ve ‘Dropped The Bomb’
Franklin Roosevelt had died that spring in 1945. Vice President Harry Truman became the President. The United States had been working on an atomic bomb for several years. It was just about ready to be used.
And Harry Truman had no idea it even existed. Back in ‘those days’ the Vice President was often kept ‘out of the loop’, particularly in the FDR administration.
So the new President had to make a, shall we say, quick decision. And he did.
On August 6, 1945 the United States dropped the first of 2 atomic bombs.
