A prescribed burn is planned in the Black Hills this week for an area west of Rapid City. If the weather cooperates, The Mystic Ranger District on the Black Hills National Forest will ignite 221 acres on the Silver Mountain project Tuesday, November 15 and Wednesday, November 16.

The Silver Mountain project area is about 10 miles west-southwest of Rapid City between Highway 16 and Sheridan Lake Road, along Boulder Hill Road to the west. Smoke from the burn could case some traffic issues on Highway 16. Smoke may also impact the Hill City and Rapid City areas.

The goal of the burn is to lessen the severity and extent of future wildfires in the project area. It will reduce the amount of possible fuel for future fires, invigorate healthy pines and improve habitat for big game species.
