Polls Still Show Presidential Election a Dead Heat; Will This be 2000 Revisited?

I have a strange feeling that this campaign will NOT be over once the polls close on the West Coast. According to a CNN poll, the race for president of the United States is a dead heat:

Seven of the eight national polls released since Sunday indicate the race for the White House is in a dead heat, like most have shown for weeks.

More importantly, it’s a similar story in the key battleground states that will decide whether President Barack Obama or Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be victorious on Tuesday.

According to the final CNN/ORC International poll released before the election on Sunday night, 49% of likely voters questioned in the survey say they support the president, with an equal amount saying they back the former Massachusetts governor.

What does this mean to you? If the vote is in fact that close, the final outcome could come down to provisional ballots, absentee ballots and overseas ballots. In those cases, it could take as many as 10 days before they get voted.

And, if the numbers remain close, we may be looking at a sequel to the George Bush/Al Gore election in 2000 where a dispute over ballots in Florida led to a case before the Supreme Court. It was also marked only the fourth time an elected president lost the popular vote.

Could we see the same thing this year?
