A Sioux Falls couple got scammed while trying to buy a Boston Terrier puppy listed on Craigslist.

"These people saw an ad on Craigslist and started corresponding with these people they believed had a business," according to Police Spokesman Sam Clemens.

"After a couple of days, they decided to purchase a dog. Really the red flag is the company wanted them to wire money to them. They believe the business was in Texas. But, they aren't sure in this point of time. Unfortunately the couple did wire five hundred dollars to this business. It was sometime after that the couple checked with the BBB and found out it was a fake company. It was then reported to police."

Before making a deal on the internet, Clemens says do some checking on the business before sending money.

"Talk to somebody whether it's law enforcement, some friends or family members before you send money. There are probably some legitimate businesses that require wiring money. It's also a red flag for scammers."

Once the money is sent, Clemens says the sender will never get it back.
