RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Rapid City police say an officer responding to a shooting near a homeless shelter shot the suspected gunman.

Police spokesman Brendyn Medina tells the Rapid City Journal the suspect shot a man Sunday afternoon outside the Cornerstone Rescue Mission.

Medina says a responding officer fired on the suspect after the man threatened him with a handgun.

The suspect and shooting victim were taken to a hospital. Information on their conditions wasn't immediately available.

Medina says no officers were injured.

The officer's name was not immediately released. The state Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating.
