Please Help a Senior Citizen Have a Merry Christmas

homeinstead.com

Last month I heard about a program called “Be a Santa to a Senior.”  It’s a program that  collects Christmas presents for needy and isolated senior citizens.

I had every intention on doing this, but haven’t.  I have a soft spot in my heart for the elderly.  My parents had me when they were 42, so growing up my parents were always older than the other parents.  That never bothered me.  I actually think it made me a more respectful person.

My dad passed away at 79, but I still have my mom and she is 85 years young.  My dad was in a nursing home for a few months and my mom and two sisters all worked in a nursing home.  I visited my dad every day while he was in the nursing home.

Other seniors at the ‘home’ weren’t as lucky.  Some never had visitors.  I felt so bad for them.  Did they have family who just didn’t take the time to visit?  Maybe they didn’t have any family.  I can’t imagine being deserted just because you got old.

A recent news story on KELO-TV reminded me of this wonderful program.  I plan on going to Lewis Drug immediately and choosing a few ornaments on the “Be a Santa to a Senior” tree.  Each ornament has a wish list of a needy senior.  Please, do the same.  The news story said

With less than six days before the deadline, nearly 500 ornaments still hang on the trees.  As of this week, only half of the seniors are getting gifts this year.

How would you feel if everyone forgot about you at Christmas?  Please help this program.  Let’s clear the trees of every ornament and make sure every senior in this program has a Christmas present.

Trees are set up at all of the Lewis Drug stores in Sioux Falls and also in Brandon.
