ALEXANDRIA, S.D. (AP) — A Plankinton teenager who pleaded guilty to accidentally shooting and wounding his friend with a handgun he got as a high school graduation present has been sentenced to serve about five months in jail.

Eighteen-year-old Logan Evans earlier pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the June 22 shooting of 17-year-old Nick Lawson. Authorities say Evans pulled the trigger as a joke, thinking the gun was unloaded, but it wasn't. Lawson was shot in the chest but survived.

The Daily Republic reports that Evans on Wednesday was given a five-year suspended state prison sentence and ordered to serve 150 days in jail, in 30-day increments over the next two years. He then will be on probation for five years. He also was ordered to pay more than $202,000 in restitution.
