PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Pierre man accused of abusing a baby when he passed out drunk has been sentenced to serve 20 years in prison.

Twenty-five -year-old Darrell Custer told a judge in April that he was holding the 9-month-old child in June 2015 when he passed out onto a bed, and the baby hit his head on a door frame before Custer fell on top of him.

KCCR radio reports that Hughes County State's Attorney Wendy Kloeppner on Wednesday called the case "the most horrific thing ever done to a child" in her 13 years as a prosecutor.

Custer in April pleaded guilty to a child abuse charge. His sentence includes more than $85,000 in restitution for medical expenses. The child's mother and father both testified, saying they wanted "justice and closure."
