Temperatures soared across South Dakota over the last week leaving most of the state with Red Flag warnings for fire hazards. Pierre hit 106 degrees around 4:00 PM Sunday, July 9.

Although hard to believe, the searing heat failed to set a record. It fell 4 degrees short of that. The Rushmore State's capital hit 110 back in 1936.

It was also the kind of sweltering heat that kept kids home from the city pool. That's right. Apparently, it was too hot to swim. Pierre's Capital Journal reported zero swimmers in the pool in the late afternoon.

What does the forecast look like for South Dakota moving forward this week? The southeast has slight chances of rain Monday night through late Tuesday, while the central part of the state is not expected to get much relief form the heat. Mid to upper 90's through the entire week. Even the Black Hills will teeter around the 90 degree mark.
