PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Pierre philanthropist is donating $25,000 to the South Dakota State Historical Society to fund an event celebrating the return of a historic South Dakota artifact.

The historical society says philanthropist Mansour Karim has offered the challenge grant to help support the Great Sioux Horse Effigy Return Celebration, a three-day event scheduled to be Oct. 10.

To meet Karim's challenge grant, society officials still need to raise another $7,500, but their overall goal is to raise an additional $17,500 by Oct. 1.

The Great Sioux Horse Effigy was recently returned to the museum after being featured in "The Plains Indians: Artists of Earth and Sky," an international touring exhibition.

It will go back on display at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre in October.
