HARTFORD, S.D. (AP) — Some residents in Hartford have turned in petition signatures at city hall in an effort to recall their mayor.

The Argus Leader reports the group trying to oust Mayor Bill Campbell turned in the signatures Tuesday. Petition organizer Tony Randall says the group collected 314 signatures, 50 more that the number they needed.

Campbell became Hartford's mayor in May, having previously served on city council. He and city council members have been under scrutiny after they voted to eliminate the position of economic development director this summer. In August, residents voted to keep the economic development position after petitions were circulated. The turnout quadrupled that in Hartford's last municipal election.

Campbell did not immediately return a call and email from the newspaper seeking comment Tuesday.
