A petition drive was announced June 12, 2015 to bring the choice of non-emergency ambulance service to a public vote in Sioux Falls. Jay Masur of Med-Star Ambulance comments on the procedure.

Today we're going to be handing in our initiative petition and we're going to start collecting signatures here as soon as the city attorney has an opportunity to look at it, to put this on the ballot so that people may have a choice for non-emergency ambulance service in the city of Sioux Falls.  Right now the people have a choice when it comes to going outside the city of Sioux Falls, but they don't have a choice on inside the city of Sioux Falls and we're going to try to make it happen so that people do have a choice on which service and how much they're going to spend on this service.

In a recent Sioux Falls City Council meeting, a question was asked of the city attorney regarding a scenario where an election would call for a change in ambulance service and how that would affect the city's standing with the current contract. The response indicated that the city was not obligated to break a current contract due to a change enacted by a voting decision.
