Peter Jennings Signs Off ABC TV News For The Final Time
April 5, 2005.
That was the day ABC News anchor Peter Jennings, in a voice sounding ragged and rough, informed us he had lung cancer. It would be his TV news sign-off.
Jennings had been around the world, reporting news from every corner of the globe. As the anchor for ABC news, he was one third of the ‘Big Three’ of network news, along with Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather.
Millions of us remember watching Peter Jennings reporting the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. His face and voice will remain an indelible part of that devastating day for all of us.
In this clip, his last on ABC, he tells us that he had quit smoking some 20 years prior, but as he said, in a time of weakness over the 9/11 events, he had started again.
Peter Jennings died August 7, 2005. He was 67.
