Hate is such a subjective thing. But like it or not, it's a lot easier for most of us to identify the things we don't like, than it is to list the things we do.

With that in mind, VIVA Lifestyle & Travel is publishing the results of a survey of dislikes done by the dating app, appropriately named Hater. Tapping into people's negativity is actually what Hater does, matching people based on their common dislikes.

So when you break it down by state, there are some interesting 'hates' out there.

In Oregon, it's spin class. Californians hate fidget spinners.

Minnesotans can't stand the thought of drinking alone; while in Texas sleeping with the window open is number one on the hit list.

Which brings us home - to South Dakota.

According to Hater, the one thing people on the Mount Rushmore State despise the most is the New York Times.

You read that right.

We don't hate going to the gym (Montana), cleaning (Arkansas), tuna salad (Georgia), or even winter (Connecticut) the most, but rather a newspaper that most of us have probably never even read.

I suppose when I think about it, South Dakota's 'hatred' of the New York Times probably has less to do with the paper itself, but rather with what the Times represents - East Coast snobs and liberalism.

As for me, I'm more of a Vermonter (waiting in line) or an Idahoan (asking for directions).

What about you?
