A statement released by the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office has announced that there will be no charges for former Hartford City Councilor, Doyle Johnson.

The investigation acknowledges the fabricated e-mail that Johnson read at a recent council meeting prior to resigning on December 1 2015, but does not find that any laws were broken.

After reading the fabricated e-mail, Mr. Johnson has resigned from the Hartford City Council and it is our understanding that he has publicly admitted his role in fabricating and reading the email and has taken responsibility for his actions.  Although Mr. Johnson’s actions showed dishonesty and poor judgment, such actions do not clearly fall within our criminal statutes regarding false entries into a public record. Therefore, there is no prosecutorial merit in bringing forth any criminal charges in this matter.  Although we understand that this is an emotionally charged political issue, Minnehaha County will not be putting any more time or resources in to this matter and consider it to be closed.
