SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Some people in Sioux Falls worry that a new ordinance opening new areas to billboards will result in a flood of the signs.

The ordinance approved by voters in April expands billboards to more commercial properties and removes a special permit requirement for advertising near a park or school.

Supporters say the new billboard opportunities will benefit advertising companies and also landowners who want to sell sign leases. But others worry it will result in a proliferation of large signs.

The Argus Leader reports that there was one billboard permit filed by the city in both 2012 and 2013. Since the ordinance went into effect in late April, 19 have been filed.
