As we get ready to change the calendar from August to September, we prepare for our first look at the changes on the field for the Nebraska Cornhusker football team.

The now Mike Riley-led-Huskers open the 2015 season, September 5, at home with BYU. Once again this season, ESPN 99.1 is your exclusive home in the Sioux Empire for Nebraska Cornhusker football.

I talked with the 'Voice of the Huskers' Greg Sharpe this week about the vibe surrounding this team, and what to expect on both sides of the ball from the Big Red in 2015.

Here are some of the headlines:

  • Apart from the obvious differences in offensive and defensive schemes, Greg says effect of the new coaching staff on the attitude surrounding the team isn't that noticeable.
  • Nebraska is unranked heading into the season and Linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey says the team feels 'disrespected'. Greg says he likes that attitude from the team, but can't fault voters for keeping Nebraska out of the pre-season Top 25.
  • Offensively, quarterback Tommy Armstrong has had a solid training camp, but still needs to work on getting more accurate. Greg says Armstrong's confidence has never been higher and his transition to a new offensive game plan has gone smoothly.
  • The running game will be handled by committee, at least to start the season, with Imani Cross and Terrell Newby trying to pick up where Ameer Abdullah left off. Greg says Cross has dropped 20 pounds and looks quicker.
  • The biggest injury of training camp so far has been to wide receiver and kick returner De'Mornay Pierson-El, who is out until October with a foot injury. Greg says that will greatly alter what Nebraska can do offensively.
  • Up front, the Huskers are trying to fill three holes on the offensive line. Greg says that new group made huge strides during training camp.
  • Defensively, pre-season All-American Maliek Collins is back at tackle, with Sioux Falls native Nate Gerry anchoring the secondary and Josh Banderas returning at linebacker. Greg says the linebacking corps will need some younger players to step up and contribute.
  • As for the schedule, Greg likes getting the Huskers getting BYU, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Iowa all at home this season.
