Walking can lower your blood pressure, increase your "good" cholesterol and help control your weight. All of those benefits can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

On Wednesday, April 6, 2016, lace up your sneakers and participate in National Walking Day. Everyone who walks can "donate" their minutes walked to the American Heart Association by posting their minutes on social media at #AHALaceUp. Those minutes will count toward a national goal of 100,000 minutes walked.

Several local companies like Avera Health, Dakotacare and Great Western Bank will hold events to help their employees get moving.

Start your own event at work. Talk to the boss and encourage everyone to take a walk during their break on April 6.
