For years, Murdo, South Dakota has been known for a few things.

This tiny town of less than 500 people is about two-thirds of the way from Sioux Falls to Rapid City on I-90, and since 1954, has been home to the Pioneer Auto Show, which houses a collection of more than 300 vintage cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors.

More recently, Murdo has gained notoriety as the home of South Dakota Senator John Thune. But now, one of the city's eating establishments is putting Murdo on the map.

The Murdo Drive-In has bee included on the Mental Floss list of the '50 Best Drive-In Restaurants in the U.S.' What makes this pick even more impressive, this isn't a list of the best drive-in place in each state, but rather the best in the entire country.

So why did Mental Floss include Murdo Drive-In?

Murdo Drive-In has been serving comforting roadside fare to locals for over 30 years. Every May, the restaurant reopens and fires up the grill for customers dining inside, on the front patio, or in their cars. But note that they close for the season on August 31, so you'll have to go elsewhere for burgers and soft-serve during the fall and winter months.

Murdo Drive-In is open every day during the summer from 11:00 AM to 10:30 PM and isn't just a place that features chicken strips, milkshakes, and a couple of burgers on its menu. They also feature :

  • A turkey, veggie, pizza, or local grass-fed beef option on your burger
  • Four different chicken sandwiches, including Hawaiian chicken
  • Five other sandwiches - including fish, BBQ, and BLT
  • Broasted chicken
  • Tacos, enchiladas, and nachos
  • Salads
  • A variety of ice cream options - including shakes, cones, sundaes, cyclones, slushes, floats, and something called an 'Icy Penguin'

I don't know about you, but I'm getting hungry!

Road trip anyone?
