RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Recent stormy weather in Rapid City has hampered work on a $24 million reconstruction of the road considered the gateway to the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

The Rapid City Journal reports that some of the work on the Mount Rushmore Road project is on schedule but other parts have been pushed back by about two weeks.

Construction began last October on the project that's been in the works for about a decade. The rebuilding to be done in three phases over several years will include widening the four-lane road with a landscaped median, turning lanes and new curbs and sidewalks.

About 24,000 vehicles use the road each day.
