Atticus Finch
WikiMedia

With Father’s Day coming up on Sunday, I’m thinking all about dad things this week. Everything from being a dad myself, memories of my dad, dads we loved on TV and how about dads from movies, the ones that really touched us.

There were countless movies that were centered around an actor playing a dad. I know I’m going to leave one or three out here. But I did the best I could to list at least some of the most memorable movie dads.

1. Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962)
Fatherly advice: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

2. Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) in “The Godfather” (1972)
Fatherly Advice: “A man that doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man.”

3. Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) in “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983)
Fatherly Advice: “Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes. Or, perhaps you don’t want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the earth, which is only four short hours away.”

4. John Kinsella (Dwier Brown) in “Field of Dreams” (1989)
Fatherly Advice: “(Heaven) is the place dreams come true.”

5. Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) in “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980)
Fatherly Advice: “No, I am your father.”

6. George McFly (Crispin Glover) in “Back to the Future” (1985)
Fatherly Advice: “Last night, Darth Vader came down from Planet Vulcan and told me that if I didn’t take Lorraine out, that he’d melt my brain.”

7. Furious Styles (Laurence Fishburne) in “Boyz n the Hood” (1991)
Fatherly Advice: “Any fool with a (penis) can make a baby. But only a real man can raise his children.”

8. Henry Jones Sr. (Sean Connery) in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989)
Fatherly Advice: “Junior, I have to tell you something. The floor’s on fire, see. And the chair!”

9. Mufasa (James Earl Jones) in “The Lion King” (1994)
Fatherly Advice: “A king’s time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, Simba, the sun will set on my time here, and will rise with you as the new king.”

10. Dr. Evil (Mike Myers) in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” (1999)
Fatherly Advice: “Scotty, don’t!”

11. George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) in “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)
Fatherly Advice: “Zuzu’s petals. Zuzu’s…there they are!”

12. The Old Man (Darren McGavin) in “A Christmas Story” (1983)
Fatherly Advice: “‘Fra-gi-le.’ Must be Italian.”
