Most Embarrassing Play
This day in history, October 25, is a date that one Vikings player would like to forget. In 1964, Jim Marshall of the Vikings recovers a fumble and runs 66 yards in the wrong direction.
He thought he was scoring a touchdown. Instead he helped score a safety for the other team.
Marshall, even though he did make this error, must be remembered for much success. He was truly one of the greats that played the game.
He played defensive end for the Vikings from 1961 to 1979. He played in Pro Bowls after the 1968 and 1969 NFL seasons.
He recovered 30 fumbles, an NFL record. He was a member of the Vikings’ famous ‘Purple People Eaters’ which consisted of Marshall (DE), Alan Page (DT), Gary Larsen (DT), and Carl Eller (DE).
The Vikings credit Marshall with 127 career quarterback sacks, second most in Viking History behind Carl Eller. He is one of 10 players to have played in all four of the Vikings Super Bowl appearances in the 1970s.
