Most Amazing Football Play This Year Happened in Le Mars
This play should have ended as a sack or an interception or an incomplete pass, but it didn't. It was good for a two-point conversion.
On Friday night in Le Mars, IA, Gehlen Catholic senior quarterback Blake Wiltgen was rolling to his left to throw into the end zone. The North Union High School defender bear hugs him and starts to take him to the ground when Wiltgen blindly flips the ball blindly into the air toward the end zone. Senior Colton Kneip leaped into the air to snag the shot duck for two points.
While the play looks like a horrible decision, it really isn't. On the try after a touchdown, according to high school rules, any result other than a successful kick or two-point conversion is nothing more than an unsuccessful try. The ball is dead. If it had been intercepted that would have just been the end of the play. Pro football is the same. Only in college football can the extra point try be turned into points for the defense.
