Question: If it snows more than two inches will a Snow Alert be issued in Sioux Falls? Answer: Maybe.

Multiple factors will come into play for the latest winter storm affecting the area. Galynn Huber Manager of the Sioux Falls Fleet Services has been watching the weather closely as more snow has fallen east of the area. “It could be one of these things where it’s sliding to the east of Sioux Falls and (snow amounts) could stay in the 2.5 inch range. I may not call a snow alert. It depends on what the snow is like once it’s down and the amount.”

Huber says a determination whether residential areas need to be plowed will be made sometime on Tuesday. “I like to give people plenty of time so that they know there is a snow alert so that they can get vehicles moved off the street.”

Other factors that will hold sway in the decision involve a lack of wind and providing rest for his crews. Since Christmas Day the City of Sioux Falls has been sending workers into the conditions in 12-hour shifts.

The snow itself is much drier than the precipitation that fell on Christmas Day. Huber says this finer snow tends to create slicker than normal conditions.
