Mitchell Mayor Tabs Coach to Be Corn Palace Director

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — The athletic director and men's basketball coach at Florida National University is in line to be the next director of the Corn Palace tourist attraction in Mitchell.

Mayor Jerry Toomey has tabbed 30-year-old Scott Schmidt for the job. The City Council must approve.

The Daily Republic reports the 30-year-old Schmidt has Mitchell ties — he's a former basketball player at the high school and Dakota Wesleyan University. Schmidt declined comment until his appointment is made official.

Schmidt would replace Dan Sabers, who resigned last September for undisclosed reasons. Sabers had replaced former director Mark Schilling, who resigned in March 2014 after a state audit concluded he mishandled money.

The Corn Palace is billed as the world's only palace dedicated to the grain. It attracts about 200,000 tourists each year.
