MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — A church in Mitchell is asking the city council for permission to demolish one of its historic buildings.

The Holy Family Catholic Church has requested a demolition permit for its rectory, which has served as the home of the parish's priests since the 1920s.

The rectory currently sits in a historic district, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976 and is also on the South Dakota State Register of Historic Places.

The state historical society says there's no other feasible alternative available to the church.

City council documents show the rectory has water leakage, mold levels above normal limits and windows that need replacing. The church also says the building is "virtually uninhabitable."

The city council next meets on Tuesday evening.
