FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Residents of Pierre and Fort Pierre are set to come together for a gathering to help clean up part of the Missouri River.

The Pierre Capital Journal reports that the event will be held July 6.

Paul Lepisto of the Izaak Walton League says more than 100 Pierre and Fort Pierre residents removed roughly 5,000 pounds of trash from the river during the event last year.

It's scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Down's Marina, with free dinner to be served afterward. The cleanup happens shortly after the Fourth of July holiday, when heavy boat traffic leaves behind a lot of garbage.

Last year, Lepisto says nearly 2.4 tons of garbage was removed from the river.
