MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was at training camp on Wednesday while mourning the death of his father, Bill, who died on Tuesday night at the age of 84.

Zimmer says he wanted to be around the team, including his son Adam, who is a linebackers coach, to help him deal with the loss. Zimmer's daughters flew in to be with him as well.

Zimmer says his father was a great mentor for him. Bill Zimmer was a longtime football coach at Lockport High School in Illinois. He had been ill for some time, but Mike Zimmer said the death still was unexpected.

In other training camp news, running back Adrian Peterson did not practice because of a thigh bruise. Peterson says he would be ready to play if it were the regular season.
