Sioux Falls got its first experience with thunder and lightning in a long time on Tuesday. Add a little hail in the mix and it sure feels like spring.

The irony was as thick as the clouds this morning. Soon after Minnehaha County enacted a burn ban due to dry conditions, the skies opened up to a shower that dropped pockets of rain and hail in the Sioux Falls and surrounding area.

Size of hail in Sioux Falls was mainly in the pea to dime size. As the line of rain proceeded to the east, the hail increased to quarter size prompting a warning from the National Weather Service between 12:25 PM and 1:00 PM for Northern Lyon County in Iowa and Rock and Nobles Counties in Minnesota.

It will take more than the few hundredths (officially .30) that fell to quench the ground’s thirst. Today was a good start. Maybe it takes a burn ban and construction projects starting around town to induce a shower.

For the upcoming week projections show really good chances of rain on Wednesday night and Thursday. After falling about an inch and a half short of average for March, a good soaker this week will get the precipitation scale closer to in balance.
