MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - Family members of the late Sen. George McGovern say his cremated remains will be buried early next year in a historic Washington, D.C., cemetery.

Nephew Matt McGovern tells the Daily Republic that the remains are currently in Sioux Falls, where McGovern died in October at the age of 90.

Matt McGovern says the family is looking at a mid-February burial.

When McGovern's wife, Eleanor, died in 2007, she was originally interred at City Cemetery in Mitchell. but her remains were moved to Rock Creek later that year. One of the McGovern's daughters, Terry, is buried in Rock Creek.

McGovern had considered being buried in Mitchell, the town where he grew up and attended college. The community's Dakota Wesleyan University hosts his library and center for leadership and public service.

Meanwhile, feeding South Dakota has received more than $70,000 in donations in memory of the late Sen. George McGovern.

Executive director Matt Gassen tells the Daily Republic (http://bit.ly/RvxKVb) that as McGovern grew gravely ill, his family asked that donations be given to the organization in his memory.

Gassen says he was overwhelmed then and still is today.

Feeding South Dakota through offices in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City provides food and money to 450 organizations across the state. The organization's annual budget is $4 million, so Gassen says $70,000 is significant.

McGovern's family asked for the dollars donated in McGovern's honor to be used for food backpack programs for needy school children in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
