Mayday PAC to Spend $1M to Support Democrat Rick Weiland

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A political action committee says it will spend $1 million to support Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Rick Weiland.

Mayday PAC says it'll begin running TV ads Tuesday in Sioux Falls and Rapid City media markets.

The super PAC has the self-proclaimed goal of getting "big money" out of politics. It was founded by Harvard University professor and political activist Lawrence Lessig, who was born in Rapid City.

A super PAC may raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to support candidates for federal office but must operate independently.

The ad says Weiland believes that farmers, ranchers, workers and families "deserve a fair shake."

Weiland, former Republican Gov. Mike Rounds and independents Larry Pressler and Gordon Howie are vying for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Tim Johnson.
