Man Sentenced for Fatal Crash at Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota man has been sentenced to serve four years in prison for a crash that killed a North Dakota woman on the first day of last August's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
Authorities said 20-year-old Nickolas Hartwell, of Belle Fourche (foosh), was driving recklessly on Interstate 90 when his car struck a motorcycle ridden by 63-year-olds Roger and Rose Ann Richard, of Belfield. Rose Ann Richard later died.
The Rapid City Journal reports that tests concluded Hartwell had been drinking alcohol and using illegal drugs before the crash.
He pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter and was sentenced Thursday to the maximum seven years in the State Penitentiary, with three years suspended.
