Homes and businesses in Sioux Falls are still in recovery mode after the late August flood. Not all the streets are at full capacity yet with one major thoroughfare waiting for a return to full service.

One rut is deep enough on 49th Street near the Empire Mall that cars should not be driving in the outside eastbound lane. During peak driving hours traffic will stack up until this short stretch is fixed.

Essentially, Sioux Falls Public Works will be filling a couple of potholes. The storm that passed through on August 27 undid a couple of previously patched holes at that location.

After the waters receded, the damage was revealed. The hole goes all the way down past the concrete. It’s possible that some base material will be needed to fortify additional area under the non-exposed segment. Worthy of note is the adjacent intersection of 49th and Louise was the last portion of street to be cleared after the downpour.

Logic dictates that dry weather would go a long way in getting this lane back in service. There is a less than promising forecast in that regard. Drivers, continue your preparations for traffic congestion near 49th and Valhalla for the immediate future.
