Madison City Commission Repeals Street Fee

MADISON, S.D. (AP) - The Madison City Commission has repealed a measure that would have imposed a special fee on most property owners to finance street maintenance and repairs.

The Madison Daily Leader reports that Mayor Roy Lindsay says commissioners will spend the next two weeks reviewing the maintenance fee and other ways that could be used to fund expanded street maintenance and repair work. Lindsay says officials in the eastern South Dakota city listened to complaints about the special fee approved by the commission last month.

The fee would have required property owners other than schools, churches and nonprofit organizations to pay $1 for each foot of property fronted by city streets. Officials estimated the fee would have raised about $386,000 a year.
