Big news for the town of Luverne, Minnesota, they have recently been named the first purple heart city in the state. The designation, which is offered through the Military Order of the Purple Heart, has been given to over 800 cities across the country since 2012.

Luverne now joins just one city in South Dakota -- Sioux Falls -- and one city in Iowa -- Council Bluffs -- that have be designated Purple Heart cities. According to purpleheart.org, to become a purple heart city, city leaders are required to pass a resolution supporting its Purple Heart veterans.

To celebrate this honor, resident and Vietnam veteran Buck Underwood is planning on setting up street signs in August along U.S. 75, near the north and south entrances to the community.
