Luke Bryan, ‘Crash My Party’ – Song Review

Crash My Party
Captiol Nashville

Luke Bryan‘s new song ‘Crash My Party’ would fit well on his last album ‘Tailgates and Tanlines.’ The ballad is a continuation of themes introduced with ‘I Don’t Want This Night to End’ and ‘Drunk on You,’ two No. 1 hits for the ACM Entertainer of the Year. At first listen, it’s difficult to become excited about a song that’s so familiar.

The mood of the arrangement runs counter to Bryan’s story. This is a hopeful love song, but the chord structure and tone trigger some sadness that is never justified.

If you wanna call me, call me, call me / You don’t have to worry ‘bout it baby / You can wake me up in the dead of the night / Wreck my plans, baby that’s alright,” he sings during the chorus. “This is a drop everything kinda thing / Swing on by, I’ll pour you a drink / The door’s unlocked, I’ll leave on the lights / Baby you can crash my party anytime.”

Rodney Clawson and Ashley Gorley wrote ‘Crash My Party’ — Clawson also co-wrote ‘Drunk on You.’ Jeff Stevens is back to produce the album, as he has all of Bryan’s projects. The team is using the “If it ain’t broke …” strategy here, and they’ll likely find a big radio hit with this song, as it’s tailored for a mainstream audience. A more critical palate may crave something with more flavor.

Ain’t a spot downtown that’s rockin’ the way that you rock me / Ain’t a bar that can make me buzz the way that you do / I could be on the front row of the best show / And look down and see your face on my phone / And I’m gone, so long, hang on / I’ll meet you in a minute or two,” Bryan adds during the second verse.

Vocally he’s a little stiff, but plenty genuine and passionate as he almost begs this girl to come his way. The hook of Bryan’s ‘Crash My Party’ is between the lyrics, in the way he indicates that his love may not be reciprocated. “Call me, call me, call me.” That’s the subtle message that will likely become more obvious with time and several dozen listens.
