Come join in a “people’s parade” whether you are Irish or not. Downtown Sioux Falls is host to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday March 12.

A tradition begun by Sylvia Henkin 37 years ago gets another run with noted Sioux Falls Cardiologist Dr. Pat O’Brien as Parade Marshall who has a solid Irish pedigree.

“I’ve got the name and that takes it over the top. I’m 75 percent Irish. There’s a Frenchman that snuck in there some place but both sides of the family we’ve got Irish.”

The parade has undergone recent changes such as setting the date on an adjacent Saturday to St. Patrick’s Day. O’Brien also says for this year, a new route is in place.

“(The route goes) all the way down Philips from 13th to about 5th. People can stand along that route and see it all.”

Larry Fuller who is helping organize the event, extends the invitation to watch or join. “Anybody can march in the parade. It’s fun.”

To participate there is no pre-registration, but you must purchase a button for three dollars per person to march. Buttons will be sold starting before noon mainly along the start of route. Festivities for the Sioux Falls St. Patrick’s Day Parade begin at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
