DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) — Lawrence County's planning and zoning board is recommending approval of a rock quarry that some area residents say would jeopardize historic trails and lead to other problems including dust and road damage.

Rapid City-based Mountain View Ranches LLC is seeking a county permit for a 192-acre sand, gravel and rock quarry off Crook City Road. The company says only 10 acres would be operated at a time, and land would be reclaimed as the work progressed.

The Rapid City Journal reports that many residents spoke in opposition at a board meeting Thursday. Centennial Valley resident Les Howard said the quarry would affect the valley for generations.

The board is recommending the County Commission approve a permit with several conditions aimed at limiting the quarry's impacts on the surrounding area.
