RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The last living person to work on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial turned 95 years old on Tuesday.

Don "Nick" Clifford tells the Rapid City Journal that working on the monument was "the greatest thing with which I was ever involved."

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum is credited with memorializing Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt in South Dakota's Black Hills. From 1927 to 1941 about 400 workers built the memorial.

Clifford began working on the memorial in 1938. The Rapid City man says he was the youngest person working on the project at the time. He says he earned 55 cents an hour.

Clifford says "it's quite an honor to be the last man living who helped create that masterpiece."
