Jury Will Hear TV Interview of Confessed Sioux Falls Killer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Jurors who will decide the fate of a man who admitted killing an elderly South Dakota woman in her bed will be allowed to see a jailhouse interview James McVay gave to a TV station in Madison, Wis.

McVay was arrested there after the July 2011 stabbing death of 75-year-old Maybelle Schein in Sioux Falls. McVay told a reporter that he planned to kill and steal his way to Washington, D.C., to assassinate the president.

He's pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder, and jurors in March will be deciding whether he lives or dies.

Judge Peter Lieberman in Sioux Falls has ruled that jurors will be allowed to see the TV interview. He ruled in July that statements McVay made to authorities after his arrest also are admissible.
