SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota apparently swapped out a vegan for two outspoken vegetarians as the featured entertainment on the state float in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Rocker Joan Jett was originally scheduled to ride on it but was removed after backlash from ranchers because she's a vegan and supports the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Her replacement was kept secret until Thursday morning's parade when it came out that pop rock band The Summer Set from Scottsdale, Ariz., stepped in at the last minute and took her place.

KELO-TV reports that two of the group members are featured on a PETA website because they're outspoken vegetarians.

On the site, they call a vegetarian diet a "higher evolved way of living."
