PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Attorney General Marty Jackley says a South Dakota man who was 14 when he was charged with killing a taxicab driver in Pierre will likely get a new resentencing hearing.

Jackley told The Associated Press that it appears a ruling Monday from the U.S. Supreme Court means Paul Dean Jensen will get a chance at freedom. The Supreme Court justices voted to extend a ruling from 2012 that struck down automatic life terms with no chance of parole for teenage killers.

Jensen was convicted in 1996 for shooting and killing cab driver Michael Hare earlier that year.

Jackley says Jensen is the only inmate in the state to be affected by the ruling. He says a court will still have the discretion to resentence Jensen up to life imprisonment.
