(NPN) Intertribal Bison Council in Rapid City, S.D. has received a $200,000 grant from the USDA.

The non-profit organization, which represents Indian nations around the United States based in Rapid City, will use the grant to provide best management practices training on low-stress handling of buffalo.

IBC was one of 13 organizations in 13 states or territories to receive grants. In Minnesota, Latino Economic Development Center also received a $200,000 grant. Funds will be used to provide legal and business training to small Latino and Hmong agricultural producers.

USDA Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack made the announcement Thursday. The USDA says the grants are one part of the department’s efforts to strengthen the rural economy.

“These grants will help socially-disadvantaged business owners get the tools they need to succeed and expand markets across the nation,” said Vilsack. “This funding is an example of the Obama administration’s dedication to the economic stability of rural communities throughout the country.”

Funding is provided through USDA’s Small Socially Disadvantaged Producer Grant program, which offers technical assistance to help producers develop new markets and grow their operations.
